178,388. Ritchie, D. J. Jan. 4, 1921. Vehicle lamps.- In a head-lamp having a source of light, a reflector and a projecting lens, the central area r<1> of the reflector R is of ellipsoidal form and the zones r<2>, r<3>, r<4> are formed according to one or more curves which lie off the main part r', so as to produce in the beam transmitted by the lens P a region of lesser illumination outside the region of bright illumination produced by the part r<1>, all the light reflected by the reflector being projected through the lens. The zone r' is ellipsoidal, the zone r' conical and the zone r' a curve maintaining the continuity between the adjoining zones. The light in the outer part of the projected beam is transmitted through the central part of the lens and the light in the concentrated region of the beam is transmitted chiefly through the outer zones of the lens.
