Abstract

178,153. Brown, R. S. Nov. 8, 1920. Stoppers closuring at mouth of vessel; vacuum closures; stoppers, making.-Relates to closures for bottles, tins, jars, &c. of the type comprising a lid having a rim with locks, and clearances between the rim and the receptacle, disengagement of the locks from corresponding portions of the receptacle being effected by pressing the rim inwards at the clearances. According to the invention a closure of this type is so constructed and applied to the receptacle as to obtain a substantially direct uniform seal between the closure and the receptacle. This may be effected with or without a sealing medium, and the surface of the closure making the sealing contact may be formed into a surface of rotation by arranging for the flow of material at the parts deformed in making the locks and clearances. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a lid b is formed with locks k, k' on the depending rim and with outwardly deformed clearances l. On applying inward pressure at the points l, a releasing action is set up in the directions m, thus disengaging the locks k, k<1> from the corresponding formations on the receptacle. In this form, one lock k may be shorter than the other and the position for applying the inward releasing pressure nearer to one lock than the other. In another form, the cover and the receptacle may be rectangular, the locks being on two opposite sides. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the cover is circular, the clearances being obtained by recesses r<1>, r<2>, r<3>. The cover is applicable to tapered vessels, tumblers, " pepperettes," or receptacles formed with beadings, projections, &c., which may be adapted to offer more than one locking position for the lid to lock, or at more than one rim-engaging level. The rim may be integral or non-integral with the cover and may be interrupted, channelled, beaded, cut, or otherwise strengthened or weakened to vary the disengaging action; the locks may be strengthened or may be disposed at different levels. In the form shown in Fig. 12, additional locks k' not disengaged by rim deformation may be provided to secure the closure against accidental release. Engagements of the form described in Specification 178,148 may be added to any forms to which they are applicable. The rim may be adapted for the application of the disengaging pressure at locks not intended to be disengaged at this stage. An additional seal may be applied at places other than the seal proper. Means, such as are shown at x, Fig. 16, may be provided to apply the inward disengaging pressure on the clearances by rotation until the part x registers with and presses the clearance, inward. The rim may be configured or weakened so as to adapt it for use as a safety valve when used in conjunction with preserved foods. The cover may have hinges in addition to the locks.
