Abstract

Stethoscopes.-An instrument for use by engineers and others in detecting irregular running in machinery comprises a diaphragm E stretched between two sound ducts A, A' which communicate by means of tubes K, K<1> with earpieces. The sound ducts A, A<1> comprise two cylinders with tapering ends, and with an inwardly extending flange D on one to which the diaphragm E is secured. A sounding post J is screwed into a socket h on the shorter arm H' of a lever pivoted at g to a bracket carried by one member A and working through a slot in the other member A<1>. The longer arm of the lever is secured to the centre of the diaphragm, so that any vibration of the sounding post J is considerably amplified by the diaphragm E before the sound is transmitted to the earpieces. The earpieces are kept in close contact with the ears by means of a spring N.
