Abstract

176,886. Clifford, F. P. Dec. 15, 1920. Temperature, adjusting and indicating.- A temperature-indicating instrument especially applicable to the cooling-water of an aircraft engine consists of a thermometer and a barometer, with the index of the thermometer arranged to read against an index moved by the barometer. The thermometer bulb 3 containing volatile liquid is connected to a bourdon tube in a casing 1, the bourdon tube operating a pointer 4 moving over a temperature scale 5. Mounted in the casing 1 is a barometer, to the pointer 6 of which is attached an index in the form of a short arc 8 extending over the scale 5. The length of the arc 8 represents the range of permissible temperature of, the cooling- water, say from 93‹ C. to 97‹ C. at sea-level. The barometer is calibrated so that the movement of the index 8 over the temperature scale is in accordance with the change in the boiling point of water with variation of pressure so that, so long as the pointer 4 is over some part of the index 8, the temperature of the cooling-water is known to be within permissible limits at the particular altitude of flight.
