Abstract
123,751. Motometer Co., (Assignees of Schlaich, H.). Feb. 23, 1918, [Convention date]. Thermometers. - A thermometer, particularly intended for the cooling system of an internalcombustion engine, consists of a bulb 1 connected by a capillary tube 3 to an indicator 2. The latter consists of a Bourdon or like tube 10 formed into two series of co-axial turns 13, 15, connected together by an intermediate turn 14. The open end of the tube 10 is secured at 11 to tho casing 12, where it is also connected to the tube 3. The closed end of the tube 10 is secured to one end of a lever 37 which rotates freely around the spindle 31 carrying the pointer 30, the other end of the lever being secured to one end of a bimetallic compensating coil 39, the other end 40 of which is secured to the spindle 31. This coil 39 is so wound as to compensate for variations of temperature in the casing 2. The bulb 1, capillary tube 3, and Bourdon tube 10 are completely filled with alcohol or like liquid under an initial pressure of about 300 lb. per sq. in., a filling tube 49 being fitted for this purpose. The casing 2 is provided with a glass coverplate 26, secured by a screwed bezel 27, a flared ring 25 being fitted between the plate 26 and dial 24 ; the dial is secured to the outer ends of two supports 48, the inner end's of which are secured to the base-plate 12. The capillary tube 3 is shown in section in Fig. 4. The walls 45 are pressed inwards and the tube is surrounded by a protecting sheath 46 as described in Specification 125,361. It is led into the casing 2 through a flared aperture 43. In using the instrument, the bulb 1 is inserted in the cooling jacket of the internal-combustion engine and the indicator is mounted on the dash-board of the vehicle.
