Automatic starters which exclude resistance from the motor circuit by the action of a relay or the like are provided with means such as a rheostat arm 5 for manual setting of the amount of resistance subject to exclusion. In the apparatus shown, current, when turned on, flows from one main L, through an arm 5, a contact 9, a lead 14, and resistance r, to the motor armature A and the other main L'. An automatic delayedaction relay 3 subject to the back electromotive force of the armature makes connection through a contact 8, an insulated tip of the arm 5, and a portion of the resistance r, to the motor, the amount of resistance excluded depending on the previous setting of the arm 5. The arm may be moved afterwards to insert further resistance or to take it out completely and to vary field resistance r<1>. A relay 4 temporarily short-circuits any resistance that may be in the field at starting.
