To all whom t may concern:
.Be it known that I, FRANK J. SEAnoLT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motor-Controlling Rheostats, of which the following isa speciiication.
This invention relates to devices -for controlling electric motor circuits and has for its obj ect the provision of a device of this character in which the lstarting and the speed regulation of the motor may be accomplished in a In carrying out my invention I provide in connection with the starting and speed regulating resistances, a single controlling arm adapted to control both of said resistanesv and thereby accomplish both the starting and speed regulation. The contacts of the starting resistance are arranged in a row parallel with those of the regulating resistance and adjacent thereto, and the controlling arm or member is arranged to engage both rows of contacts simultaneously. QIn order that the conti oll'ing member sha-ll be effective to vary only one resistance-at a time, I rovide means whereby one resistance is 's iort circuited while the other one is being varied. As the `member moves in one direction, las for instance during the starting movement, the regulating resistance is short circui'ted while duringthe speed regulating movement the starting resistance is short circuited. I also provide means whereby upon the occurrence of abnormal circuit conditions vthe controlling arm is returned to the oli or protective position with reference to the motor.

The circuit connections of these resistancesA are such that, as the arm 6 is moved to 'the ri ht, the starting resistance 4 will be gradualIy cut out of the armature circuit while when it is4 moved to the left theregulating resistance 5 will be cut in. In order that the regulating resistance 5 shall not be varied as the arm moves to start the motor, I provide means for short circuiting this resistance during the starting movement. This short-circuiting may be accomplished in various ways but I have found that a very'convenient method of producing this result is to arrange a contac stud 8 an spring-pressed switch-arm 9 so that current will pass directly to the iield and short cir cuit the resistance 5. Then the running position is reached, contact is broken between the contact S and switch 9 thereby. opening the short circuit. An arm l0 is arranged to be moved by the arm 6 as the latter moves to running position, and is provided with a brush l0 so that when it reaches the running position the brush l0 will make contact with stud 12. Stud 12 has electrical connection with the last one of the studs 2 and is likewise electrically connected to a binding post which forms an armature terminal. The arm l() being a conducting element, when it reaches the stud l2 current will pass through the arm l() to the stud 12 and thus short 01rcuit the stud 2 and starting resistance 4.. The. arm l() vtheretore When it reaches the running position `it breaksthe short circuit on the 'resistance 5 and at the same time short circuitsthe starting resistance 4.' yThe arm 6 may then be moved in a reverse direction and vary the resistance 5 without affecting the resistance 4. This particular arrangement of arm 10 for shifting the short circuit from one resisthas two functions.-
