3284. Igranic Electric Co., [Cutler- Hammer Manufacturing Co.]. March 1. Systems for continuous-current motors only.-A motor M has a field resistance R<3> controlled by a relay 5 responsive to the armature current and arranged to short-circuit the resistance during the starting period. The relay has two windings 9, 10 and behaves as a vibrating relay when the winding 10 alone is energized, but rises to keep the resistance R<3> short-circuited when both windings 9, 10 are energized. The armature circuit is controlled by a line contactor 1 and resistance contactors 2, 3, 4. Each contactor, except the last, carries an auxiliary contact to complete the actuating-circuit of the next contactor, and the contactors close progressively subject to the delaying action of series relays 6, 7, 8. While the contactors are closing, the two windings 9, 10 are energized, and the resistance R<3> is short-circuited, so that the motor starts with a strong field. At the end of the starting period, the contactor 4 short circuits the winding 9, and the speed of the motor is then controlled by the vibrating relay 5.
