Abstract

Scrcw propellers.-In a variable-pitch propeller each blade has a bevel-wheel at its root which gears with two bevel-wheels keyed to a rod with right and left hand spiral keyways, pitch alteration being effected by longitudinal movement of the rod. The boss is in three parts, a forward portion a attached to the hollow driving-shaft b, a middle portion c screwed to a and carrying the blades, and a tail-piece e screwed to the part c. A central solid rod f turns with the power shaft by reason of its connection through a cross-head m with rods o passing through the collar k. The rods o are attached to a collar n which can be slidden on the shaft b. The rod f has right and left hand spiral keyways g to which are keyed bevel-wheels h, i. The latter engage a bevelwheel j screwed and pinned to the shank of each blade d. The blade shaft is supported in the boss on both sides of the bevel-wheel j.
