Winding-machines.-In a yarn-winding machine of the vertical-spindle type, a device 14 carrying yarn guides 13, 19, Fig. 2, works up and down on a screwed spindle 1, which carries a ratchetwheel 4 and is rotatably mounted in a bearing 2 attached to the carrier-bar 3. As the carrier-bar 3 is lowered, a lever 5 engages a sloping part 8 and thus turns the ratchet-wheel 4 by means of a pawl 6. The device 14 may engage the screw-threads of the spindle 1 by means of a spring 15 to permit ready disconnection and movement by hand, while any rotation is prevented by the engagement of a projecting part 16 with a parallel vertical rod 17. The yarn guide 19 is carried by a pivoted arm 18 and is held by the tension of the yarn 20 in a raised position so that the pin 21 thereon is normally clear of the rod 12. Upon breakage of the yarn or a stoppage of the bobbins, the guide 19 is released and falls or is spring-pressed so that the pin 21 turns the rod 12, thus disengaging a detent and allowing the ratchet-wheel 4 to be moved both backwards and forwards by the feed-pawl 6. On the restoration of the yarn, the guide 19 is lifted and the detent re-engages the wheel 4. An eccentricallypivoted upright guide 23 is fitted to limit the engagement of the lever 5 with the incline 8, the position of the guides 23 being adjusted by a push-rod 26. In a modification, an oscillating lever 5, Fig. 7, is arranged under the ratchetwheel 4 and is driven in both directions by a projecting roller 30 travelling up and down in a slot 33 in a plate 31 secured to the bed 10. The inclination of the plate 31 can be varied.
