To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,1TIARRY A. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopedale, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an. Improvement in Filling-Replenishing Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.-
This invention relates to filling replenishing looms in which a supply of filling carriers is maintained in a hopper from which they are transferred in succession to the shuttle by means of' a transferrer.
In'this general type of loom the hopper is supported for rotative movement upon a stand at the replenishing side of the loom, and after each operation of the transferrer, the hopper is rotated sufliciently to bring another filling carrier or bobbin into transferring position. lVhen in transferring position, the filling carrier is in the path of movement of the transferrer, so that as the latter is given its operative stroke it will engage the filling carrier and force it from the hopper to the running shuttle. To prevent the filling carrier from being accidentally dislodged from the hopper when the filling carrier is in position for transfer, it has heretofore been the common practice to provide a pivoted bobbin support or finger, the end portion of which projected under the filling carrier when in transfer ring position, but yielded sufiiciently to permit the carrier to pass from the hopper to the shuttle when the transferrer was operated. After a transfer, it has been usual to. automatically rotate the hopper to bring another filling carrier into transferring position, and such position has usually been determined by a stop or abutment against which the leading filling carrier would rest when in proper position for the action of the transferrer. The loom attendant places loaded filling carriers in the hopper from. time to time to maintain the hopper supply. In doing this he may disturb the rotative positionof the hopper, and cause the leading filling carrier to be moved from proper ransferring position; or the hopper may he accidentally moved; or not be properly turned by the automatically operating devices after a transfer to properly position the filling carrier. hegardless of the cause,

Another important feature of the invention consists in pivotally mounting the bobbin support upon a swinging arm which, through the action of spring means, normally maintains the bobbin support in operative position, but yields to carry the bobbin support away from operative position when the transferrer acts upon a filling carrier that is not in proper position for transfer.
The above features and other novel characteristics of the invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then defined by the claims.

The general construction of the type of loom illustrated is well known and familiar to those skilled in the art and needs no extended description. It includes the rotatable hopper or feeder comprising parallel disks supported upon a hopper stand and provided with means for engaging the end portions of filling carriers which are mounted in the hopper or feeder in circular series. The loom frame 1 has secured thereto, as usual in this type or class of machines, a hopper stand 2 rising from a bracket 3 appropriately secured to the loom frame by means such as bolts 1. Pivotally mounted on the hopper stand 2 for rotative movement relative thereto on the axis 7 is the rotary hopper 5 comprising the usual end disks which may be provided with usual means for engaging the ends of the filling carrier or bobbins 6 to carry them to transferring position as the hopper is rotated upon its axis.
The mechanism for effecting transfer of the filling carriers or bobbins is illustrated as of a well known type comprising the transferrer 8 pivotally mounted on the horizontal stud 9 carried by the hopper stand. The transferrer 8 is provided with a depending arm 10 carrying the pivoted dog 11, Fig. 1, which, on call for filling replenishment, is opei'atively positioned relative to a hunter 12 mounted on the lay 13. The transferrer 8 is normally held in its raised or elevated position by the usual spring 1 1, Fig. 1, and is depressed to effect the transfer movement by engagement of the hunter 12 with the dog 11 as usual in this general type of machines.
The hopper is rotated to bring a fresh filling carrier or bobbin into position for transfer by suitable mechanism and in the present instance this rotation is secured by a dog or member 15, Fig. 2, pivoted at 16 to the transferrer 8 and provided with a tooth 17 adapted to cooperate with the teeth of a ratchet wheel 18 connected to the rotary hopper. Upon the reverse movement of the transferrer following a transfer, the tooth 1? engages the ratchet wheel. 18 and rotates the hopper to bring the leading filling carrier or bobbin of the series in the hopper into position for transfer.
Filling replenishment mechanism of the type illustrated is usually provided with a 'detent pawl 19 provided with a teeth 20 adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheel 18 and vrevent reverse rotation of the hopper. These various parts thus far described, may be of any usual construction, as the invention is not restricted in this respect.
The hopper stand 2 is provided. with an abutment 21, Fig. 2, against whichthe leading filling carrier rests when such leading carrier is in transferring position, at which time it is beneath the end of the transferrer and in proper position to be transferred from the hopper to the shuttle 22 beneath.
In the class of looms to which this in vention relates it is usual to provide a bobbin support which extends beneath a filling carrier. when it is in transferring position, but is yieldingly mounted on a fixed pivot to permit passage of the filling carrier from the hopper to the shuttle under the operation of the ransferrer. Should the filling carrier, however, fail to be properly 130S1- tioned for transfer when the transferrer acts, a smash is'liable to occur and the bobbin support be broken. The present inveninvention is not restricted to the particular details, but may be variously contrived.
Pivotally mounted preferably to the outside of the hopper stand 2, at 23, is the swinging arm 24 carrying at its lower end the stud 25 on which is pivotally mounted the bobbin support 26. The stud 25 is extended inwardly toward the rotary hopper from the swing arm 24, and the bobbin support 26 carried by the stud is thus positioned between the heads of the rotary hopper and beneath a filling carrier 6, when the latter is in transferring position.
In order that the bobbin support 26 may yield downwardly to permit the filling carrier or bobbin to pass from the rotary hopper to the shuttle beneath under the opera tion of the transferrer, the bobbin support is yieldin 'ly held in position by means of a spring. in the present instance of the invention the bobbin support comprises a sleeve 27 from which extend the lugs 28. Between the lugs 28 extends the pin 29 which is embraced by the lugs 30 and 31 projecting laterally from the swing arm 24. The sleeve 27 of the bobbin support is provided with a flange 32. which, when the parts are in associated relation, extends over the ends of the lugs 30 and 31 as indicated in Fig. 1.
The pin 29 has a head 33 between which and the face of the lugs 30, 31, is a spring 34, the construction being such that the spring 34 normally holdsthe bobbin support 26 in its bobbin supporting position to prevent accidental movement of a filling carrier, when in transferring position, from the hopper, but yields to permit passage of the filling carrier from the hopper to the shuttle beneath when the transferrer operates upon call for filling replenishment. The end of the pin 29 in front of the lugs 28 may be provided with a suitable head or nut 35 and, if desired, suitable washers may be provided each side of the lugs 30, 31, as indicated in Fig. 1.
The swing arm 24 has connected therewith at 36 a spring 37, the other end of which is secured at 38 to the hopper stand,
and a stop 39 formed on the hopper stand 2 serves to limit the action of the snring 37, and maintain the swing arm 24 in its normal position at which time it holds the bobbin support 26 in operative position, as hereinbefore described.
From the construction described, it will to the shuttle beneath and at such times will cause the bobbin support 26 to yield downwardly to permit the fill-ing carrier to pass. If the leading filling carrier, however, fails to be properly positioned for transfer when the transferrer operates, as indicated by full lines in Fig. 2, the swing arm 24 willmove backwardly from the dotted to full line position, Fig. 2, and carry the bobbin support from operative position, as indicated by dotted line, and thereby prevent breakage of parts.
Improper position of a. filling carrier which is. to be transferred may happen from a number of causes. Either the mechanism forrota-ting the hopper may not bring the leading filling carrier against the abutment 21, or the rotary hopper may be moved manually to disturb the proper position of the filling carrier, or, when the attendant places loaded filling carriers in the hopper, disturbance of the proper position of the leading filling carrier may take place. In any event, quite regardless of the cause which improperly positions the leading filling carrier for transfer, the bobbin support, in addition to its yielding pivotal movement, may move bodily away from operative .position under the force exerted by the transferrer through the improperly positioned filling carrier as the transferrer acts upon it.
Claims:
1. In a filling replenishing mechanism for looms, the combination of a rotary hopper adapted to supportfilling carriers, a trans ferrer, an abutment against which a filling carrier bears when in position for transfer, a filling carrier support underlying the filling carrier when in transferring position and adapted to yield downwardly to permit the filling carrier to pass, and an arm carrying the filling carrier support mounted to permit said support to move bodily at substantially right angles to the path of move ment of said transferrer to prevent a break when during transfer the filling carrier is not in proper transferring position.
2. In a filling replenishing mechanism for looms, the combination of a rotary hopper adapted to support filling carriers, a transferrer, a filling carrier support underlying the filling carrier when in transferring position and adapted to tilt to permit the filling carrier to pass as it is transferred from the hopper to the shuttle, and means for sustaining the tiltable filling carrier support in operative position and yielding to permit bodily movement of the filling carrier support in a direction at substantially right angles to the path of movement of the transferrer to prevent a break when the filling carrier is not in proper transferring position at the moment of transfer.
3. In a filling replenishing mechanism for looms, the combination of a hopper for holding filling carriers, means for positioning a filling carrier for transfer, a transferrer, a filling carrier support for retaining the fill ing carrier in the hopper when in position for transfer and yielding downwardly to permit the filling carrier to pass, and means for normally holding the carrier support in operative position and permitting bodily movement thereof away from its normal operative position in a direction at substantially right angles to the path of movement of the transferrer to prevent a break when the filling carrier is not in proper transferring position at the moment of transfer.
4. In a filling replenishing loom,the com bination of a rotary hopper for supporting filling carriers, means including a filling carrier support for holding a filling carrier in position for transfer, and yielding means for holding the carrier support in operative position and permitting both a swinging and bodily movement thereof away from operative position to prevent a break when the filling carrier is not in proper transferring position at the moment of transfer.
5. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a rotary hopper, a transferrer, means including a filling carrier support for holding a filling carrier for the action of the transferrer, an arm carrying the support and pivotally mounted to bodily withdraw the support from operative position, and means including two springs for holding the support in operative position, one yielding to permit movement of the support in a downward direction and the other yielding to permit movement of the sup portin a horizontal direction.
6. A filling carrier support, comprising, in combination, a swinging arm, a finger pivotally mounted on the swinging arm, and yieldable on its pivot to permit passage of a filling carrier, and means acting through the swinging arm for holding the finger in operative position and yielding to permit bodily movement of the finger in substantially a horizontal plane away from operative position to prevent a smash.
7. In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of the hopper stand, a rotary hopper mounted in the stand, a bobbin support adapted to hold a bobbin in the hopper when in transferring position, a transferrer, means supported by the hopper stand and having said bobbin support swingingly mounted thereupon, and a. spring acting through said means for holding the bobbin support in operative position and yielding to permit bodily movement of the bobbin support in substantially a horizontal plane away from operative position to prevent a break or smash when the bobbin is not in proper transferring position at the moment of transfer.

bination of a hopper stand, a rotary hopper, a swinging arm supported by the hopper stand, a bobbin support pivotally mounted on the swinging arm and project ing across the path of movement of a bobbin as it is transferred, and means for normally holding the carrier support in operative position and permitting bodily movement thereof away from operative position.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a hopper stand, a rotary hopper, an arm pivotally' connected to the hopper stand, a spring acting on said arm, a stop for limiting the action of the spring, a bobbin support pivotally connected to the arm and extending into the path of movement of a bobbin as it is transferred from the hopper, said pivoted arm arranged to permit said pivoted bobbin support to move bodily in a horizontal direction away from the normal bobbin transfer, position.

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a hopper stand, a rotary hopper, an arm pivotally connected to the hopper stand, a spring acting on said arm, a stop for limiting the action of the spring, a bobbin support pivotally connected to the arm and extending into the path of movement of a bobbin as it is transferred from the hopper, and a spring for yieldingly holding the bobbin'support in position relative to the said-arm. 7

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination ofv a hopper stand, a rotary hopper, a swinging arm pivotally' mounted outside the hopper stand, a U-shaped bobbin support straddling the free end of said arm and, pivotally secured thereto, said bobbin support provided with a portion extending into the path of movement of a bobbin as it is transferred from the hopper, a spring for yieldingly holding the free end of said swinging arm adjacent the bobbin transfer position, and a second spring carried by said swinging arm for yieldingly holding said bobbin support inits bobbin engaging position.v 1

In a filling replenishing loom, the combination of a hopper stand, a rotary hopper, a swinging arm pivotally mounted outside the hopper stand, a U-shaped bobbin support straddling the free end of said arm and pivotally secured thereto, said U-shaped support having one leg thereof positioned to extend into the path of movement of a bobbin as it is transferred from the hopper, and a spring carried by said swinging arm and operatively secured to the other leg of said U-shaped support to retain Sai'dfirsB-GO mentioned leg in yielding engagement with a bobbin.
