To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. BHoAnEs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State {of Massachusetts, have invented an Improve,
means for so mounting the filling carrier support of the character above described that a single resilient means will serve to maintain the filling carrier support in norma'l position, to hold a. positioned filling carrier in'the hopper and which will permit a combined pivotal or tilting and. lateral bodily movement of the filling carrier support when the filling carrier is forced from the hopper into the shuttle.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mounting for a filling carrier support comprising a swinging arm carried by the hopper stand which will have an extended bearing for'the filling carrier support and thereby provide amore rigid construction which is less likely to be broken by the vigorous stroke of the filling carrier thereupon during transfer and which will yield s'ufiiciently in case thefilling carrier is improperly positioned to avoid a smash.
The present invention may be stated to embody certain improvements upon the construction illustrated in Patent, No. 1,350,093, granted August 17, 1921 toHarry A. Davis,
and also to embody certain features of con struction disclosed in my Patent Number ated to strike a sudden sharp blow uponthe 1,452,655 granted April 2'4, 1923, for improvements .in filling carrier supports for 1 0m 1 A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated herein as applied to the well .known Northrop type of loom.

Such a 100m comprises the usual side frame 1, breast beamQ, lay 3, a magazine or hopper for containing a supply of fresh filling carriers (not shown) and a transferrer 4t for transferring afresh filling carrier 5 from thehopper to the shuttle 6 of the -la v'- when the running filling has become sub stantially or wholly exhausted.
'The magazine or hopper comprises a stand 7 which is usually secured tothe breast beam at one end of the loom and ,a' 'hopper I plate 8 which rises vertically fromthe-hop per stand and upon which the hopper is rotatably mounted.
The foremost per is brought into transferring -position by filling carrier 5 in the hopintermittent rotation of the hopper in'the usual manner and when in suchposition is usu ally brought up against and arrested by a guide or abutment 9- by which-it is guided into the shuttle when it is forced from the hopper by the action of the transfer-rer.

the present construction the filling; carrier support is pivotally mounted upon the lower end of a swinging arm which is pivoted at filling carrier support and the swinging movement of the arm upon which it is pivotall mounted.
n the present invention the filling car rier support is so mounted that a single resilient device serves to position a filling carrier and to permit both the tilting movement and the bodily swinging movement thereof. b
The invention further contemplates the provision of a novel mounting for the filling carrier support upon the swinging arm which is similar in some respects to the construction disclosed in my prior application above referred to.
In the preferred form of the invention illustrated herein the hopper plate 8 is provided with a laterally extending boss 12" upon which is pivotally mounted a swinging arm 13 which is provided at its lower end with an internally threaded boss 14 the threads of which terminate short of one end of the boss.
As illustrated herein the boss 1% is threaded in from the right hand end leaving the exitportion 15 unthreaded and consequently of the original diameter of the bore into which the threaded portion is cut.
The lower end of the arm 13 is provided with a long shaft or journal for the filling carrier which is provided with a bearing section 16, an intermediate threaded sec tion 17 and a bearing section 18 of smaller diameter than the section 17 adapted to pass through the unthreaded portion 15 of the boss 14.
When the shaft is screwed into place it will be locked by the jamming of the threaded portion as it reaches the unthreaded, end portion ofthe boss.
The bearing section 16 also-.may be made of greater diameter than the internal diameter of the threaded boss 14 sothat the shaft will also be locked. when screwed into place by the unthreaded bearing section 16 engaging the endofthe'boss. It will be understood, however, that eitherv Or both of these means of locking theshaft in position maybe employed as may be desired.
, The filling carrier support as illustrated wherein. ispreferably inthe form of a ll shaped plate or frame one arm. 20 of which constitutes the filling carrier support proper and normally extends in a generally horizontal position beneath the positioned filling carrier 5. -The other arm 21 of the filling carrier support extends upwardly and is provided with a bifurcated end 22 which receives a stud or bolt 23 and engages a nut 2a forming a head thereof. The bolt 23 is slidably mounted in an aperture, somewhat larger than the bolt, in a lug 25 which pro jects from the hopper plate 8 and a helical compression spring 26, surrounding said bolt, is located between said lug and a head 27 upon the upper or other end of the bolt 23.
The arms 20 and 2101? the yoke-shaper frame are provided with alined bearings adapted to fit accurately upon the respective bearing sections 16 and 18 of the journal shaft. These bearings, in the preferred form of the invention, extend into and through elongated bearing bosses 28 and 29 which project externally from the arms of the yokeshaped frame as illustrated. The filling carrier support, thus provided with long extended bearings, is very strong and rigidand is able to withstand the sudden and heavy blows applied by the transferrer even under unusual conditions such as are due to an improperly positioned filling carrier. Furthermore, the rigidly locked connection of the journal shaft to the boss 14 of the swinging arm 13.-and the long extended bearings of the filling carrier support provides a rigid construction which will not be bent or broken by the vigorous strokes of the transferrer either under normal conditions or where a filllng carrier is improperly positioned when struck by the on the lay so. that asthelaybeats up the.

rected by the-guide 9 and the arm 20 of the filling carrier support intothe shuttle. During this movement the filling carrier supporting arm 20 tilts or rocks about the pivotal shaft upon which it is mounted, the spring 26 being compressed by such pivotal movement. As the arm 21- swings away trom the lug 25 upon the hopper stand during such movement the spring 26 permits the depending arm 13, upon which the filling carrier support is mounted, to swing about its pivot 12 so that the-filling carrier support has both a tilting and a bodily swinging movement. By reason of this construction, therefore. the movement of the filling carrier" support is partially a pivotal or tilting movement and partially a bodily swinging movement which acts more effectively to guide the filling carrier into the shuttle than the pure tilting movement of the filling carrier supports of the old type. Furthermore, if by chance a filling carrier is misplaced the combined tilting and yielding bodily movement of the filling carrier support will permit the filling carrier to be forced sufficiently out of the path of the transferrer head to enable the latter to complete its full movement Without danger of breakage of the hopper plate 8 or of the hopper stand itself.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is illustrative and not restrictive and that various changes in form, construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper plate having a laterally extending lug, transferring mechanism, and means for arresting the filling carriers in said hopper successively in trans ferring position, a swinging arm, a filling carrier support pivotally mounted on said swinging arm having an upwardly extending member and a resilient device acting upon the upwardly extending member nor mally to hold it in contact with said lug and thereby position the support beneath the filling carrier which is positioned for transfer and adapted to permit both pivotal movement of said filling carrier support and swinging movement of said arm when the filling carrier support is engaged by the filling carrier being transferred.
2. In an automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper plate having a laterally extending lug, a hopper, transferring mechanism, and means for arresting the filling carriers in said hopper successively in transferring position, a swinging arm pivotally mounted on said hopper plate, a filling carrier support pivotally mounted on said swinging arm having means for supporting the positioned filling carrier in the hopper and an upwardly extending arm and means including a resilient member connecting said upwardly extending arm with the lug upon said hopper plate acting to position the filling carrier support normally beneath the filling carrier which is positioned for transfer and adapted to permit both pivotal movementof said filling carrier support and swinging movement of said arm when said filling carrier support is engaged by the filling carrier being transferred.
3. In an automatic filling replenishing loom comprising a hopper plate, a hopper, transferring mechanism and means for arresting the filling carriers in said hopper successively in transferring position, a swinging arm pivotally mounted at its upper end on said hopper plate and provided at its lower end with an internally threaded boss, a shaft having end bearing sections and an intermediate threaded section fitting said boss, the diameter of one bearing sec tion being less, and the diameter of the other bearing section being greater, than the internal diameter of the threaded boss, whereby when the shaft is screwed into the boss it is locked in place, a yoke-shaped filling carrier support having its arms journalled on the respective bearing sections of said shaft, and resilient means connecting one of the arms of said filling carrier support with said hopper plate acting normally to retain the filling carrier support beneath the positioned filling carrier and adapted to permit pivotal movement of said filling carrier support and lateral movement of said swinging arm when the filling carrier support is engaged by the filling carrier being transferred.
