Abstract

174,574. Chemical Research Syndicate, Ltd., (Assignees of Ramage, A. S.). Jan. 28, 1921, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Hydrocarbons, cracking.-In preparing low boiling hydrocarbon oils from heavy fuel oils, crude oils &c., the vapours from the oils are mixed with steam and passed over heated ferrous oxide, the proportions of oil vapour and steam being regulated to avoid oxidation or reduction of the oxide. The treatment may be effected by passage through tubes packed with ferrous oxide, which may be prepared by reducing ferric oxide in the tubes. The oil vapours and steam are supplied to the tube through separate orifices at one end. The proportion between them may be varied by varying the pressure of the steam. To obtain a spirit suitable for use as a fuel for internal-combustion engines, the tubes are heated at the inlet end to 500‹ C. and at the outlet to 620‹ C. To obtain a lighter spirit the tubes are heated at the inlet end to 600‹ C. and at the outlet end to 700‹ C.
