Abstract
174,175. Sherwood, W. M. F. Oct. 18, 1920. Convertible into velocipedes. - Ski-cycles or scooters are constructed in the form of a stem or stick b carrying the front wheel c and a base or footboard a fitted with the hinged fork e of the rear wheel f, these parts being pivoted together at a' and connected by toggle-links d, d<1> in such a way that the device can opened, as shown in Fig. 1, and used as a scooter, or it may be folded, as shown in Fig. 2, and used as a walking-stick. The portion a<1> of the base is slotted at a<3> to accommodate the wheel c when the base has been folded up, and the end a<2> is fitted with a ferrule. The base is hollow so that it can embrace the stick, two hinged foot-supporting pieces h being then folded inwards around the front of the stick. Slots a<6>, b<5>, b<4> are provided to accommodate the wheel f when the fork e has been folded forwards under the base and the base folded upwards, the ends of the axle f<1> fitting into recesses b<6>. The base is held raised by means such as a spring catch b<7>. By providing a sleeve b<x> or play at the joint d<2>, and by making the hole in the stick b for the pin a' relatively large or countersunk, the stick may be given slight freedom of movement for steering. In a modification, for steering purposes the lower end of the stick passes through a sleeve which is pivoted, as at a<4>, to the base, and to provide laterally extending handles when the device is in use as a scooter the stick-handle is divided along its length and the two parts hinged to the stem of the stick; in such a construction the stick may be used as a seat. According to the Provisional Specification, the base may be folded against, in, or around the stick.
