Abstract

Thymol, carvacrol, and other higher phenols, and alcoholic, aldehydic, and etheric bodies of the aromatic or terpene groups which are constituents of essential oils are used in association with propyl, butyl, or amyl alcohol or other higher aliphatic monohydric alcohols, or the corresponding aldehydes or ketones as antiseptics, particularly for preserving food. In the presence of oxygen, or oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or ozonic ether, compounds are stated to be formed which may be used for the same purposes or which may be decomposed by heating to yield the thymol or other constituent in a chemically pure form. The invention is described with reference to a mixture of substantially equal quantities of thymol and isobutyl alcohol which on standing in presence of air yields a reddish oily compound. This compound on distillation under reduced pressure at 50 to 60 DEG C. yields a distillate from which crystals of thymol separate on standing.
