Abstract

172,980. Rumpler, E. Dec. 16, 1920, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Aeroplanes; aerial machines coupled in pairs or trains; cars and cabins; planes, arrangement and construction of.-An aeroplane, which may have a span of more than 3 times its length, has a constant surface load throughout its supporting plane t, the live and dead loads being so arranged that a constituent part of the plane carries a definite part of the load, the stresses being thereby reduced. At points of least stress, rigid or slightly resilient joints may be provided as indicated at i to facilitate construction or to provide resiliency on landing, the portions between the joints being designed as individual machines; an increase in dimensions of the machine takes place in the transverse direction, the longitudinal length of the machine bearing a constant relation to the chord of the plane. The surface of the plane and the spars are united to form a box girder in which the freight may be moved transversely of the machine. The invention may also be applied to biplanes or multiplanes. A list of the dimensions of existing large aeroplanes is given which shows that the maximum ratio of span to length is 2.22. Floats, wheels, and skids are evenly distributed over the supporting surface and may be differentially connected together by angle levers w, and rods l. Propelling; steering, balancing, and regulafing altitude.- Propellers p, driven by motors m, which may be controlled from a central position, and elevators h mounted on supports r, are evenly distributed over the supporting plane, and may be as shown, or in line with one another on opposite sides of the main plane, and the propellers may then be alternately in front of and behind the main plane. Balancers q and rudders u are provided at the tips of the planes, but may also be evenly distributed over the plane and their dimensions may be in proportion to their distances from the centre of the machine. The motors near the tips should be capable of greater power for guiding the machine in a curved path, and for this purpose their controls may be coupled with the rudder controls. Central controls may operate the steering apparatus by means of compressed air or electricity.
