Abstract

172,532. Manhire, W. J. Dec. 21, 1920. Chain stops and holders.-Comprises a construction of combined fair-lead, cable stopper and anti-friction roller appliance for use in connection with ships hawse pipes. A channelled casting, mounted in proximity to the hawse pipe, carries a roller at each end and a screw-operated chaincable-stopper mounted between the rollers. The rollers form fair-leads from the hawse-pipe to the windlass and also serve as roller-guides to prevent grinding of the chain in the pipe. The chain stopper comprises a link-engaging bar f which is guided on columns d and raised and lowered by the handled screw g relatively to the fixed bridge e. In the " off " position the bar f forms a retaining-device to prevent the chain jumping off the rollers. The roller nearer to the hawse pipe has a groove half the depth of that in the other roller, in order to prevent bending of the links of the chain.
