Abstract

Folding models; shadow-throwers. - A toy shadow-theatre for imitating kinematograph pictures, comprises a collapsable cardboard structure with a translucent screen, and a series of figures depicted on transparent medium which 'are manipulated behind the screen, the transparent base allowing details of the figure, colours, &c. to be projected on the screen by a light placed behind it. The folding structure, shown in side elevation in Fig. 2, consists of a front 1 supported in an upright position by two side members 2 which are hinged to it, and a platform member 5 which is hinged at 4 to the front and engages in slots 6.in the side members. An opening 8 cut in the front is covered with a translucent screen 9, of parchment, linen, or the like, and vertical openings 7 in the side members enable figures to be introduced close behind the screen. The figures are printed, painted, or otherwise depicted on pieces of transparent celluloid 10, Fig. 5, which are provided with reinforcing strips 15 of cardboard that fit into detachable holders 14 by which the figures are manipulated behind the screen. Side wings, properties, &c., also depicted on transparent sheets may be fixed behind the screen.
