' 3 Claims.
The present invention relates to a toy comprising parts adapted to be held together magnetically. In a more specific form it relates to a toy representing the face of a live body, for example the face of a human being, and various parts to be held thereto magnetically. Said head may have a smooth surface curved where required, and at certain parts of the smooth surface there may be attached a plurality of parts comprising, for example eyes, a nose or a corresponding part, ears, mouth and a mustache.
An important object of the invention is to provide a novel and advantageous toy of the general character specified.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy of the general character specified which will be of particular interest to children.
A further object of the invention is to provide a toy of the general character described which is economical to manufacture and eifective in use.
Other objects, features and advantages will appear upon consideration of the following detailed description and of the drawings, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of one embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a rear view of the structure of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is an exploded view of the structure of Fig. 1, partly in section;
Fig. 6 is a view showing two parts of a ducks bill adapted to take the place of the mouth, mustache and nose of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 7 is a view showing an elephants trunk to take the place of the nose of Fig. 1 and two elephants ears to take the place of the ears of Fi 1.
Referring to the drawing, the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 through 5 comprises a body portion or face I!) of any suitable insulating material, such as rubber and well known insulating plastics. Said face ID has a rounded lower part II and a smaller rounded upper part 12 separated by a narrow trough or line l3.
Said lower part I I has a transverse bar magnet H of relatively high power and located close to the surface of the head or face It. Said magnet may be utilized to hold in position a metal piece II bearing the simulation of a mouth I5, lips I! and a chin I8.
Above said magnet H and below said line I3 is an upwardly and downwardly extending bar magnet 20 which may be inclined upwardly and rearwardly just to the rear of a generally flat portion of the surface of said head, and may be used to hold a metal mustache plate 2| with a serrated lower edge and also a nose 22 shown in the form of a plug of insulating material having a metal plate 23 (Fig. 2) secured in a recess in its inner end. Said recess may be undercut at one or more edges to receive beveled edges of the plate.
Above said line I3, said part i2 is provided with two permanent eyebrows 24, two transverse bar magnets 25 in suitable position to hold eyes 26, and two upwardly and downwardly extending magnets 21 at the sides to hold cars 28 of suitable plastic material with curved inner edges provided with metal plates 29.
Said eyes 28 are made with a metal back 30 to be attracted by said magnets 25 and transparent fronts 3!. Inside each box formed by a back 30 and front 3|, is a colored disk or pupil 32 of suitable material such as a plastic. Said pupils are loose in said boxes and therefore can float therein and give the effect of looking in different directions.
In each instance a part to be held against said head 10 is shaped to fit against the proper part thereof. It should be understood that attachable parts may be as light as feasible. For example they may be hollow.
For convenience the rear of the head I2 is a plane surface and attached thereto is a foldable supporting device 35 of sheet material such as cardboard or pasteboard. Said device 35 has a central part 36 whichis attached to said plane surface by an adhesive such as glue. Said centl'al part 36 has parallel sides provided by fold lines 31 formed as by scoring and separating said central part from wings 38. The lower edge of said central part 36 is illustrated as straight and perpendicular to said fold lines 31. The lower edge of the rear face of said head i0 is curved so that the central part of said lower edge coincides substantially with the central part of the lower edge of said central part 36 of the supporting device 35, and curves upwardly at each side. Of course the lower edge of part 36 could be varied in shape so long as it prevents sidewise tipping.
Said wings or wing members 38 have lower edges 39 so inclined to the corresponding fold lines 31 that, when the wings are turned rearwardly, they support the head ill at the desired rearward inclination. At this time the rear edges 40 are preferably perpendicular to a supporting surface 4| (Fig. 2).
To provide for holding said wings 38 in their 3 rearward supporting positions, said central part 38 of the supporting device 35 is out along said fold lines 31 and along curved lines 42 (Fig. 4) to form flaps 43. When turned back along horizontal fold lines at their bases, said flaps engage the/inner faces of wings 38 and limit the inward movements of said wings. Said wings 38 are provided with horizontal. cuts 44 and inclined cuts 45 outline two sides of flaps 46 which are free at their inner edges because of the cuts at the fold lines, used in forming flaps 43. When said flaps 46 are turned down rearwardly about fold lines which are extensions of the fold lines at the bases of flaps 43, their inner edges engage the outer faces of rearwardly extending wings 38. If the device is not to be used, the flaps 43 may be turned back into the plane of central part 36,
the flaps 46 may be turned back into the planes of the wings 38, and said wings may be folded inwardly or outwardly to bring said supporting means into compact, fiat assembly.
In Fig. 6, there is a showing of an upper part 50 and a lower part 5| of a ducks bill, the upper part 50 being provided with a metal plate 52 and the lower part 5! being provided with a metal plate 53. Said parts 50 and 5| may take the place of the nose 22, the mustache plate 2i and the plate l5. The ears 28 may be used with the ducks bill or omitted according to choice.
Fig. 7 shows an elephants trunk 55 with a base portion to fit on the lower part of the face or head l0, said'base having therein a metal plate 56 adapted to be attracted by one or both of the magnets l4 and 20.
For use with said elephants trunk there are specially shaped ears 51, each provided with a metal plate 58 to cooperate with a corresponding magnet 21 in holding said ears on said head I.
Said head or body portion l0 and the parts or appendages attachable thereto are so shaped and so designed as to produce an unusual, even grotesque appearance.
Obviously the plate or member l5 and the plate or member 2| may be made principally of pieces secured thereto for attraction by said magnets.
The toys of the present invention be very I used without others, without departing from the true scope and spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is: I
1. In a toy of the general character specified, a main body having the general outline of a face; magnets in said body beneath generally flat portions of the surface thereof including two magnets at eye positions, a magnet at a nose position, magnets at ear position, and a magnet at a mouth position; and magnetically responsive appendages comprising a plurality of face features to be selectively held against the surface of said body in said positions by said magnets.
2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said appendages include a nose device and a mustache device held in place by said magnet at the nose position.
3. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said appendages include a member adapted-to be held against said main body by a magnet at said mouth position, said member bearing a simulation of a mouth and a chin.
