Abstract

170,659. Harris, F. W., and Bardeen, H. A. July 23, 1920. Modifying physical characters of metals.-For restoring the strength and toughness of fatigued ferrous members, they are raised to a temperature of 750‹-900‹ C. by passing through them an electric current and are subjected to mechanical pressure during heating. Apparatus for carrying out this process comprises a hearth 11 on which a tube 60 to be treated rests clamped between copper heads 30. These heads 30 are connected by cables 32 to a generator or transformer, are slidable on rods 20, and are attached to sliding carriages 21, which are operated by screwed spindles 24 working in stationary nuts 26. Each tube 60 is rolled along the hearth into position between the heads and a hood 40 of heat-insulating material is lowered over it during the heating, longitudinal pressure being brought to bear on the tube by operating the hand-wheels 27. The Specification states that by subjecting the material under treatment to a mechanical pull produced by magnetic action during the heating period, better results are obtained.
