Abstract

170,345. Helfrich, G. P. July 12, 1920. Spigot-and-socket and like e overlap joints held by cement and the like.-The sections of a tunnel, adapted to be built up on land and drawn into position across a river bed, consist of an inner shell 12, Fig. 2, open at the lower part, and an outer shell 8 open at the upper part, the space between the two shells being partly filled with concrete to give the desired buoyancy, and afterwards, when the tunnel is in position, the space is completely filled and concrete heaped over the tunnel to anchor it securely, as shown in Fig. 7. Each tunnel section is composed of a series of rings having flanges 14, 15 Fig. 4, by means of which the rings are riveted together. Bracing- members 16 are provided for holding the shells 8, 12 in the desired position relative to one another. Rings 24, 25, Fig. 6, which fit one into the other, are provided on the ends of the tunnel sections to ensure that the sections fit together correctly and cement or concrete is deposited on the exterior of the joint to make a solid water-tight connection.
