Abstract

170,039. Holslag, C. J. June 4, 1920. Drawings to Specification. Uniting by fusion.-An arc-welding electrode for thin metal, cast iron, carbo-steel, &c. is provided with a thin coating extending completely or partially round the rod, consisting of silica, preferably in the form of silicate of soda, and carbon, the silica forming the principal ingredient, in order to reduce the current amperage necessary. To obtain the advantages of the higher voltages for starting the weld, and also those provided by the use of a thin coating, the coating is thickened at the end, as described in Specification 152,733, [Class 39 (iii), Heating by electricity]. In the case of an electrode which is grasped in the centre, the coating at both ends may be thickened. The coating preferably consists of silicate of soda and lamp black and may also contain calcium car. bonate, pulverized asbestos, and magnesium or boron or other substances having a great affinity for oxygen. The proportions of the constituents are preferably 1 to 30 per cent of carbon, 35 to 75 per cent of silicate of soda, 1 to 2 per cent of magnesium or boron, and 25 to 40 per cent of asbestos and calcium carbonate. The electrode is preferably used with transformers as described in Specifications 126,271 or 133,013, [Class 38 (ii), Electric currents, Converting &c]. Specifications 12724/10, 3762/11, 144,333, 147,270, 152,257, and 157,509 also are referred to.
