Flat extended surfaces, polishing. - A machine for cleaning, grinding and polishing furniture and other woodwork comprises a tool mounted at the lower end of a shaft h which h is driven, through a spring e wound in the direction of rotation, by an electric motor a mounted on rails 3 carried by a carriage, which runs on rails 6 secured to the ceiling. The motor shaft rotatably carries a cross-shaped member c, in the ends of which are pivoted levers k connected at their outer ends by links l to a cross-shaped member g, and at their inner ends by links i to the shaft h. The spring is connected by clips d, f to the motor shaft and the member g respectively, and by its pressure balances the weight of the parts. The links i pass through slots in the arms of the member g. The tool comprises a .casing q, carrying a felt pad t and secured 'by a bayonet-joint to screws z, which are mounted in a hollow member v and extend inwardly thereof into recesses in a hollow ball w secured to the shaft h; springs x are placed between the members v, q. The tool is moved over the work by handles c mounted on bearings m carried by the shaft h, and the handles carry vessels p containing cleaning, grinding, or polishing material, which flows through tubes y into the ball and through this to the tool. The ball has internal partitions z<1>, which cause a suction and draw the polishing material &c. through the tubes. In operation, the tool is pressed on the work by the handles o and is moved over the surface in a loop-shaped path. The downward movement draws the upper end of the shaft h from contact with the member g, and compresses the spring, which causes the motor quickly to follow the movements of the tool.
