Abstract

168,960. Haxton, R., and Robbins, W. June 1, 1920. Lift valves; rotary disc valves; plug cocks; leakage, preventing.-A rotary non-reciprocating spindle for a valve is made fluid tight by the cooperation of two discs with rubbing surfaces, one carried by the valve cap and the other by the spindle. The valve body 1, Fig. 1, is provided with a screwed cap 7 with a plain bore 11 in which the valve spindle 10<a> works. The lower part of the spindle 10 is pivoted at 12 to the upper part 10<a>, and is provided with a threaded bore 13 to receive the spindle 14 of the valve 4. The valve is prevented from rotating by the engagement of lugs 16 with lugs 18 projecting downwards from the valve cap. The valve 4 and spindle 14 are connected by a pin 15. A washer 9 is provided with an annular V-groove which engages with a similar rib on the upper surface of the washer 20 supported by a flange 21 on the valve spindle. The washers may be constructed of vulcanite orthe like so that the washer 9 is expanded slightly by axial pressure and forms a fluid-tight joint with the spindle. The two discs are adjusted axially by means of the flanged nut 22. In Fig. 3, the application to a rotary disc valve 29 is shown. The washer 20 is pressed upwards by a spring 31 which also presses the valve against its seating. The connecting-pin 34 works in a slot 35 which allows a slight axial movement between the valve and spindle. In Fig. 4, an application to a plug cock is shown. The spring 31 may be dispensed with, and the plug kept on its seating by the pressure of the fluid admitted' through a passage 37.
