Abstract

168,926. Eccles, W., and Metropolitan- Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. March 18, 1920. Machinery frames.-In means for connecting one body to or supporting it without twisting from four points on a second body liable to twisting out of the plane most nearly containing the four points, applicable for carrying engines, gear casings, and bodies on motor-car chassis, engines on aeroplanes, gear-casings in ships, &c., one body is flexibly secured at four calculated points to the four members of a quadilateral frame, the four angular points of which are flexibly connected to the second body. Fig. 4 shows an engine x flexibly secured at calculated points 35, 36, 37, 38 to a quadrilateral frame 31, 32, 33, 34, which is similarly secured at its angular points to the chassis parts 18, 24, 22, 23. The car body is similarly secured to the frame 39, 40, 41, 42. Flexible joints may be provided by the use of bolt connections allowing freedom or lost motion. As applied to ships, a gear-casing is carried on beams 7, 8, 9, 10, Fig. 3, of which 7, 9, 10 are connected to the webs of beams 2, 3, 4, 5 constituting the quadilateral frame and riveted to the supporting tank-plates 1, which are capable of flexure under the stresses concerned. The beams 2, 3, 4, 5 are rigid on the planes of their webs but are capable of lateral flexure and of twisting about their longitudinal axes.
