Abstract

168,688. Spence, W. L. June 11, 1920. Deflectable axle-ends. - Steering- wheel mountings, of the kind wherein the stub axle of a dished wheel rotates in a bearing sleeve and bush, are constructed with an eyebolt, the depending stem of which forms the steering-pivot, while the eye embraces and is welded or otherwise fixed to the bearing sleeve. In the construction shown in Fig. 1 for ball and roller bearings, the stub axle P rotates by means of roller bearings in a shell L which is embraced by the eye K of an eyebolt having a stem G adapted to swivel for steering in a vertical tube A forming part of the axle, ball thrust bearings being interposed between the stem G and tube A. In a modification with plain bearings shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the stub axle P rotates in a bush N secured in the shell L which forms an oil reservoir, the bearing being lubricated by an oiling ring O. In both forms, the steering arm Q passes through and is bolted to the shell L.
