Abstract

167,070. Metcalfe, R. C. July 10, 1920. Tunnel kilns.-A continuous tunnel kiln comprises a section in which the burning gases pass directly to the goods, and a section in which they flow longitudinally through heating- muffles on each side of the tunnel associated with circulating-channels adapted to set up convection currents in the kiln atmosphere. The kiln is enlarged at the firing-zone C to accommodate combustion-chambers H supplied with gas by pipes I and with air drawn from the cooling-zone D by a fan located at the charging-end M or between the firing and cooling zones. The walls of the combustion chambers H are constructed of hollow tile sections to form air-circulating channels H<1>. The partially cooled combustion products are drawn through the preheating-zone B to outlet pipes N. In a modification the cooling-zone is omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 8, the goods are fired by direct contact with the burning gases. Fuel is supplied by a fan PA connected to outlets D<10> in the roof of the cooling-zone DB in rear of transverse baffles C<10>. Combustion products pass to heating-muffles HB on each side of the preheating-zone BB. Advantageously the burners S are inclined to the direction of travel of the goods, which may be stacked to form channels F<10>.
