Abstract

166,442. James, R. W., (Remington Typewriter Co.). July 2, 1920. Carriage-retarding devices.-In a centrifugal brake of the kind comprising revolving brakemembers co-operating with a stationary surface, the brake-members are loose and are operated by an independent driver which is coupled to the carriage when the latter is released. The invention is shown in Figs. 1 and 5 applied to the direct and reverse column-selecting mechanism described in Specification 83/15, and comprising stops 21, Fig. 1, which are operated by tabulating- keys and co-operate with column stops 19 on the carriage 7; the feed-rack 10 is raised for carriage release by means of a pivoted frame operated by the tabulating-keys. The pivoted frame is now replaced by a barrel 57 which is trunnioned on a bracket 62 and supports the brake. An enlargement 56 on the barrel is formed with a depression 85, Fig. 5, containing four loose brake-members 94 and a four-armed driver 91 which is secured to a crown pinion 89 gearing with a pinion 81 on a shaft 69 provided with a pinion 73. The driverarms 92 are each formed with a radial side band a non-radial side c, and the end of the arm is out of contact with the rim of the depression 85. The brake members are formed with two straight sides for engaging the driver-arms, and one curved side which is normally out of contact with the rim and is preferably of a slightly less radius than the rim. The shaft 69 passes through an ,enlarged bore in the barrel and is supported at the front by a sleeve on the pinion 73. Flats on the shaft engage a slot in the sleeve, and the reduced part of the shaft passes through the pinion and is expanded at the end. The shaft is supported at the rear by the enlargement 56, a collar 79 preventing endways movement. The pinion 89 is mounted on a stud 87 and is formed with a square head for engaging a square hole in the driver. A cover 95 is provided for the depression 85. On operating the tabulator-keys, the barrel is rocked and the pinion 73 engages and raises the feed-rack, the carriage being thereby released from the escapement and coupled to the brake. In direct tabulating, the carriage runs towards the left and the brake-members are driven by the radial sides b of the driver arms and are caused to move outwards into contact with the rim. In reverse tabulating, the carriage is pushed towards the right and the sides c of the driver-arms operate the brake-members. The sides c, being non-radial, engage the brake-members at the ends, thus causing the brake to offer a greater resistance during reverse tabulating than during forward tabulation.
