Spindle apparatus; spindle and lifting rails; building-motions. - Relates to spinning, doubling, twisting and like machines of the kind wherein the yarn is wound upon the bare spindle or upon tubes or bobbins on the spindle which is rotated by the pull of the yarn, the nose of the cop being produced by a conical cup, within which the spindle rotates and rises as the cop is wound. The cup 2, Fig. 4, is rotated in ball bearings on the bearing-sleeve 3 of the spindle and carries arms 6 secured to a disc or cross arm 7 which rotates in antifriction bearings on a stud 7<b> in a bracket 8. The yarn passes through a guide eye in the stud 7<b> around one of the arms 6, through guide eyes on the cup and on an arm mounted on a disc 9, which rotates with the cup and is reciprocated to lay the yarn, and through a slot 2g in the cup to the spindle. The disc 9 is mounted on a rail 11. which is reciprocatad by toothed quadrants on a shaft 28, Fig. 3, oscillated by a box-cam 29 and lever 30, a retracting spring 33 being provided to eliminate back-lash. The footstep rail is carried on a sliding bracket 14<a> which is balanced by a rack which engages a pinion meshing with another adjustably weighted rack, or by a weight 16. Drag is applied to the spindle by a cord which engages a pulley 21 secured to a bush, which is splined to the spindle and supported in bearings in the dragrail so that the cord does not press the spindle laterally. A cover d<1> engages a shoulder on the spindle and withdraws it from the cop when the footstep is lowered for doffing. Specification 109,689 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
