Abstract

Lubricating oils are obtained by purifying crude hydrocarbon oils in such manner that, while all mineral acid is removed, up to 3 per cent of organic acid or phenolic or other acidic bodies are retained. In an example, crude Texas oil is treated in the usual way with sulphuric acid or liquid sulphur dioxide, sulphur is removed by any known process, and the product is washed with water only to such an extent as to ensure the removal of all sulphuric acid. The percentage of retained sulphonic acids may, if necessary, be reduced by mixing with acid-free oil. In a modification, hydrocarbon oils containing glycerides may be treated with steam until the desired percentage of free fatty acid is produced by hydrolysis of the glyceride.
