Abstract

165,223. Denson, J. D. March 24, 1920. Stopping way; planes, construction of; steering, balancing, and regulating altitude.-An aeroplane is fitted at its tail with a collapsable chamber, the mouth of which can be opened to admit air to retard a forward or diving movement; and the fincarrying board forming the top of the chamber can be elevated about its forward end without opening the chamber, to prevent nose diving. The board 42 carries a fin 48, and is connected to the sides and rear of the tail 11 of the machine bv fabric 43 which forms the sides of the collapsable chamber. The mouth of the chamber can be opened by raising the front portion of the board 42 by a hand-lever 44 which is connected to the board by links and levers 46, 45, 40, 40<1>. The rear end of the board can be raised to varying extents by sliding the fulcrum blocks 32<11> along its under surface. These blocks are carried by a sliding rod 32, pivoted to a rod 31 which is connected to the upper crank 29 on a shaft 28. By pressing upon one or other of the pedals 38, which are connected respectively to the upper and lower cranks 29, the fulcrum blocks 32<11> can be moved backwards or forwards. A hand-lever 27 is linked to a transverse shaft 23 carrying cranks at its ends for raising or lowering the rear ends of narrow longitudinallyextending planes pivoted near their front ends to the sides of the fuselage.
