Abstract

165,182. Mehler, M., and Nash, R. J. March 19, 1920. Sheet-metal frames.-The frame of a motorcycle comprises a sheet-metal inverted channel girder carrying the steering-pillar, supports for the rear wheel, spring-mounted footboards, the engine, and the engine accessories such as the fuel tanks, batteries, and carburettor. As shown the frame comprises a main part A, strengthened by stays E<2>, A<5>, and riveted or welded to a front part A<6>, having a tubular part A' forming a guide for the steering-pillar. The rear wheel is carried in a forked member B<3> hinged to the frame at B<4> and spring supported at its other end. The footboards E may be either attached to flanges A<4>, or they may be carried by C-springs attached to their ends, and anchored on transverse bolts passing through the frame. The engine is mounted directly above the rear wheel, an aperture being made in the frame for the transmission gear. A fuel tank C is mounted inside the frame and a battery D in a box D<2> is inserted into the frame through an aperture underneath it and secured by wing-nuts A<12>.
