Abstract

164,551. Cranston, A. E. March 25, 1920. Parcelling by bundling. - In a machine for automatically binding bundles of varying sizes, the bundles are successively engaged by spaced followers on a feeding- belt and conveyed thereby along the bed of the machine into proper position with relation to knotting mechanism. The bundles B, Fig. 1, are introduced to a feeder E by a conveyer D comprising endless chains 27 with members G<1> comprising links 125, 126 pivotally connected to each other, and to the chains at 125, 126, respectively. The feeder E is of similar construction, and the members G thereof advance the bundle to the position shown in Fig. 13, partially wrapping the binding-wire about it. The feeder is actuated by a segmented rack 48 nn the shaft 51, which engages a pinion 47 on a shaft connected by sprocket-gearing to a driving shaft of the feeder. The needle N descends to the position shown in Fig. 13, carrying the wire completely round the bundle and into engagement with a knotting-mechanism K. The needle comprises an L-shaped arm 29, pivoted on a shaft 30 and operated by cams C, C' through the medium of crank arms 53, 53a connected to arms R, R<1> by links 54, 54, the cams being so shaped that the needle rests for a predetermined period in each extreme position. The knotting and severing operations having been completed by the engagement of the segmental rack 48 with a pinion 57, the bundle is pushed by succeeding bundles on to a delivery conveyer 67. The wire W is tensioned by a sheave A, Figs. 1 and 6, comprising a disc 36 with an annular flange 37 surrounded by a spring-pressed ring 38, the whole rotating about a stub axle 33. The wire passes from the sheave A through guide members 31 and over pulleys 31, 31 to the extremity of the needle. The power shaft 52 is adapted to be moved in or out of engagement with the shaft 51, which controls the conveying, binding, and knotting mechanism, by a lever L, which is operated automatically through a link 92, by the entry of a bundle to the machine. The movement of the lever L is not sufficient to throw out of gear the driving-mechanism which operates the delivery conveyer 67, which rotates continuously. The machine may be duplicated so as to apply two ties to a bundle or to tie two bundles simultaneously. The automatic control may be dispensed with temporarily, the lever L being controlled by hand.
