Abstract

Articles of pure cellulose are obtained by applying a plastic sheet of cellulose hydrate to a metal mould, heating to 60-100 DEG C. to dehydrate the material and at the same time dilate the mould, and finally cooling the uncovered portion of the mould to contract the mould away from the article. The cellulose hydrate is obtained from viscose or other cellulose derivatives by ordinary methods. Imitation tortoiseshell or ivory articles are obtained by applying suitable substances to the material or to the sheets and the cellulose may be rendered impermeable if desired. The application to boxes and box linings is described.
