Abstract
163,662. Godfrey, A. Feb. 9, 1920. Blowpipe burners.- The burner nozzle of an oxy-acetylene cutting torch comprises a cap 8 formed with cutting oxygen, heating oxygen, and acetylene passages 9, 10, 11 respectively, a block 4 having a central cutting oxygen passage 5 and a heating gas passage 6, a stem 1 having a central cutting oxygen passage 2 and a spiral groove 7 on its outer surface forming the heating gas passage., a screwed socket 3 securing the coned head of the stem 1 to the cap 8, and a sleeve 13 screwing on the socket 3 and fitting over the stem 1. The heating gas mixture issues through the annular orifice between the coned lower end of the stem 1 and the correspondingly coned lower end of the sleeve 13. The size of this orifice may be varied by adjusting the sleeve 13 on the socket 3, the socket being provided with division marks reading against a fixed pointer. A gland nut 14 and packing 15 prevent leakage of the gas from the sleeve 13. The cutting oxygen passage terminates in a nipple 12 preferably formed of tungsten and projecting beyond the heating gas orifice. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the stem is provided with interchangeable lower ends or tips screwing on a projection 18. The tips 17 are partly parallel and partly conical. The parallel portion may be plain or formed with spiral grooves 19 of finer pitch than the grooves 17. An annular chamber 20 may be provided between the stem and the commencement of the finer grooves to assist in mixing the gases.
