163,424. Campbell, L. Feb. 10, 1920. Wire, strainers.-A tool for stretching and fastening bale wires comprises a bar 8 with bifurcated end 9 adjacent to which a loop 13 previously formed at one end of the wire is positioned by means such as two pins 15, and a lever 17 pivoted to the bar near the end 9 and carrying wire-gripping means comprising a transverse passage between a fixed block 18, and a pivoted pawl 19, Fig. 1, or between two fixed blocks 24, 25, Fig. 4. The free end 11 of the wire is passed through the loop 13, through the bifurcation in the end 9 of the bar 8, and through the transverse passage on the lever 17, and the wire is strained by rocking the lever away from the end 9 of the bar. The wire is then fastened by turning the bar 8 with the lever 17 about the end 9 of the bar away from the loop 13 and on to the part 11<a> of the wire; and, for further security, the free end of the wire may be bent or twisted b hand about other parts of the wire after removal of the tool.
