Abstract

163,185. British Thomson - Houston Co., Ltd., and Carter, F. W. March 26, 1920. Addition to 128,106. Axle-trucks and bogies.-In a locomotive designed for running in either direction which is carried partly on axles journaled in the main frame or frames and partly on bogie trucks at the front and rear ends, as described in the parent Specification, means are provided whereby the bogie, which for the. time being is at the rear end of the locomotive. is constrained to trail from a vertical axis in the longitudinal centre plane located ahead of its wheel base, the front bogie being unconstrained by the locomotive except for forces imposed through its swivelling centre and bearing plates. A longitudinal rod 11 terminating in jaws 9, 9, which work in guides 10, 10, is actuated by an air cylinder 12 in the longitudinal direction so as to engage a bogie at the same time as the devices for determining the direction of running of the locomotive. When the direction of running is as shown by the arrow, the rear bogie 4 has the block 8 at the end of the arm 7 held by the jaws 9 so that it radiates about a pivot in the block 8, centring springs 6 retaining the bogie in alignment. The arm 7 of the front bogie 3 is clear of the corresponding jaws 9 and the bogie is free to radiate about the pivot 5 which also has a transverse movement relative to the frame constrained by centring springs 6. When the direction of running is reversed, the block 3 of the bogie 3 is retained in the corresponding jaws 9 and the block 8 of the bogie 4 is released from its corresponding jaws 9.
