Stropping-apparatus.-The movement of the blade along the surface of the grinding-rollers 10 described in the parent Specification is replaced by axial movement of the rollers ; the blade-holder and the friction device for oscillating the blade are also modified. The axial movement of the rollers is produced by the engagement with grooves 35 in the hollow shafts 36 of the rollers of arms 33, 34, carried by the nut 28 which is reciprocated by its engagement with the screwed part of the driving-drum 27; the shafts 36 thus rotate and slide upon the fixed shafts 9. The blade-holder comprises a plate 37 having a lug 38 thereon, adapted to engage one end of the blade 23, and pins 39 to engage the holes in the blade; the holder is inserted in the tube 19. Oscillation of the blade, after one side of the blade edge has been ground, is brought about by means of a gear sector 40 which is secured on the trunnion 11 of the tube 19, and engages a sector 41 loosely mounted on a pin 42 extending from thd spindle of the large gear wheel 5. The sector 41 is located between a disc 43 fixed to the pin and a disc 44 slidably keyed on the pin and held against the sector by a spring 46. The friction between the sector and the discs 43, 44 may be adjusted by means of a nut 47. The sectors 40, 41 may have frictional engagement instead of being toothed.
