Abstract
162,930. Barnwell, F. S., and Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. May 18, 1920. Steering and balancing. - The undesirable torque occasioned by the unsymmetrical arrangement of a rudder is counterbalanced by means of a connection between the rudder and the elevators, which are thus adjusted simultaneously with the rudder so as to introduce an opposing - torque. In the form shown, adjustment of the rudder 12 is accompanied by movement of the elevator flaps 15, 16 in opposite directions so as to introduce a torque opposing that due to the disposition of the rudder above the longitudinal axis of the aircraft. The rudder is fitted with an arm 18 which is connected by rods 26 to sleeves 25, which carry the operating-arms 19 of the elevators and engage with helical splines 24 formed on sleeves 23 secured to the elevators. When the rudder is adjusted, the two sleeves 25 are slid in the same direction and, being held against rotation by the elevator control cables attached to the arms 19, cause rotation of the sleeves 23 and elevators in opposite directions, the splines 24 of the two sleeves being of opposite hand.
