Milling-machines. - A horizontalspindle milling-machine for cutting grooves in or flats on small rods such as those used in the production of sewing-machine needles for leather work is provided with a work-holding jig which automatically raises the blanks into contact with the cutters and withdraws them after the operation. The jig comprises a vertical standard h fitted to receive a slide i and having a base secured to the traversing table b which is vertically adjustable by means of a dovetail guide d. A yoke member e, the ends of which carry adjustable stops f<1>, g<1> is bolted to the dovetail guide. The head i' of the slide i carries a turntable n rotatable on a vertical pin r and supporting two bed-plates o, o<1> having longitudinal grooves o<2> in which the blanks are retained by means of spring tongues t and pressure bars v. The arrangement is such that when one set of blanks is positioned beneath the cutters the other set is easily accessible for removing the finished articles and inserting fresh blanks. The two working positions of the turntable are determined by a spring-pressed pin y engaging a groove n<1>. During the movement of the machine table in the direction of the arrow a sliding bar k, Fig. 8, contacts with the stop f<1> whereupon further movement causes the slide i to be raised through a bevelled projection i<1>, thus bringing the blanks on the bed-plate o up to the cutters and causing the bar k to engage the end of a lever l. After a predetermined cutting stroke in the opposite direction the lever l is disengaged by the stop g' and the bar k is shifted by a spring m and the work carrier falls by gravity to its lower position to disengage the cutters from the work. Simaltaneously with the tripping of the lever the traversing gear is thrown out and the machine brought to rest.
