Abstract
162,367. Macrorie, A. K., Fortescue, C. L., Bryan, G. B., and Airey, H. Morris-. Jan. 23, 1920. Vacuum tubes.-A transmitting valve has a metal casing forming the anode provided with means such as a pump for maintaining the vacuum permanently, the joints between the various parts of the valve being sealed with wax or similar material, and arranged so as to admit easily of being taken apart for renewal or adjustment of the electrodes. As shown, the anode A, preferably of nickel or nickel alloy, has an upper cylindrical part M of glass, porcelain or other insulating material, with a flanged metal cap Q, and is connected with a pump through a pipe T. The cap may be provided with channels for cooling. The filament cathode F is wound non-inductively, and is supported on copper or other metal rods S by means of clips, or split joints with clamps, so as to be capable of adjustment or renewal. The grid G is of molybdenum wire carried by a support of tripod or other form. A cooling medium, such as water, oil or air may be circulated through a jacket C. The valve body may be supported by an insulated tripod L. Parts of the apparatus may be treated with enamel or cement, or may be polished, burnished, or plated, to render them airtight.
