Abstract
274,183. Brown, W. J., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. April 13, 1926. Vacuum tubes.-A high-frequency generator has two sets of electrodes, the anodes 540, Fig. 1, being joined by an insulating member 60 forming with the anodes the envelope of the valve, the grids 56 and cathodes 52 being o connected together by parallel rectilinear conductors 35, 30 respectively inside the envelope, and the anodes connected together by similar conductors inside or outside the envelope, the leads for supplying energy and for determining the mean potential of the parts being connected with the centres of the conductors. The conductors 35, 30 are supported at the centre by a block A of steatite, porcelain or other insulating material and are secured in grooves therein by metal insets 20, Fig. 2. The leads are secured to the insets and sealed by discs to radial glass tubes 67. A flat spring 57 connects one of the insets with the correspond. ing discs. The ends of the grid conductors are straightened as shown and welded to rings 53 with gauze caps 54, the grid wire being wound around the conductors. The anodes are sealed to re-entrant glass tubes and surrounded by cooling jackets 156, and the pipes 161 supplying the cooling fluid may act as conductors for the supply of energy to the anodes. The grid terminal may be connected through a high resistance or biassing battery with the negative terminal of the cathode, and condensers, mounted inside or outside the envelope, may be connected between the leads to the cathodes and those to the grids and anodes. Choke coils may be inserted when connection is not made to potential nodes on the conductors. The anodes may be maintained at zero or a low positive or negative potential, and the grids at a high positive potential relatively to that of the cathodes. Guard rings may be provided for the anodes. Energy may be radiated directly from the valve or a tuned conductor may be coupled thereto. Specification 268,028 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification the conductors may be of U-shape so as to minimize radiation.
