Abstract

162,341. Rand, F. R., and Sanders, T. H. Dec. 29, 1919. Couplings, automatic.-In an automatic coupling comprising a coupling hook and a link arranged side by side and carried by an equalizer bar upon the vehicle, the hook upon one vehicle being adapted to be coupled to the link upon the other to effect a double coupling, disengagement of the hook from its opposing link is made by a manually operated eccentric which is returned to its normal operative position by the uncoupling of the vehicles. To each end of a short equalizer bar c, which is pivoted on the draught hook of the vehicle, a hook a and a link b is pivoted. A framework e under the hook has an inclined surface j which acts as a guide for the opposing link b when coupling. A cam d which can raise the hook a for uncoupling, is pivoted at h and is connected by a wire f to a drum on a transverse shaft i. When the vehicles meet, the opposing link b slides up the inclined surface of the framing e and raises the hook a which drops behind the link. To uncouple, the hook a is raised by the cam d until the recess g engages with the point of the hook. On the separation of the vehicles, the links disengage from the hooks and at the same time the cams are revolved by the links and drop into the position for the next coupling. The cam d may be operated by a system of links, and the link b may be of triangular shape, the side opposite the pivot of the link being inclined towards the side of the vehicle. The coupling may also be applied to the central type of buffing gear.
