Abstract
161,774. Hirst, T. E. C. Feb. 13, 1920. Buffers.-A buffer which can also be applied beween the axle box and underframing of a vehicle, of the type described in Specification 159,349, [Class 108 (iii), Springs &c.], consists of a cylindrical outer casing a<x> in which works a main piston e, attached to the hollow buffer spindle b contains a spring b<1> which keeps a piston valve d, the stem of which passes through the main piston e, on to a seating e' formed on a shoulder in the main piston. Both pistons are fitted with hydraulic packings. The interior of the buffer casing a<x> is partly filled with oil through a hole x in the side. When the buffer plunger is compressed the force is taken up the main-spring a until the piston valve stem d<2> reaches the surface of the oil; on further compression the piston valve is forced in and compresses the spring b<1> above it. A hole is made in the side of the extension e<2> of the main piston which communicates with a groove d<3> of variable depth cut in the piston valve extension d<2> to enable oil to pass above the seating e'. In a modification, the hydraulic packing d<1> and the groove d<3> in the piston valve are dispensed with and an annular groove containing hydraulic packing is made near the end of the extension e<2> of the main piston.
