Abstract

A plastic film is produced in a tubular shape by extrusion. In this process, the outer surface, for example, of the tube is roughened and the tube is cut up in the longitudinal direction in order to divide it into strips. An adhesive is applied to the smooth surface of the strips and the self-adhesive strip thus obtained is wound onto a roll. From these strips, pieces are cut off and bonded to some places on the packages, which places come to rest on one another during stacking. The resistance of the packages to slipping is thus considerably increased. <IMAGE>

Description

(54) METHOD OF PROVIDING NON-SLIPPERY AREAS ON CONTAINER SURFACES (71) We. OY WIIK & HOGLUND AB, of Kyrkoesplanaden 22, 65100 Vasa 10, Finland, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a method of providing non-slippery areas to the normally slippery exterior surfaces of sacks, bags or the like flexible walled containers.
In connection with the transport and storage of goods in packages, such as sacks and boxes, the problem of keeping the packages in a stacked position has caused substantial difficulties. The reason is to be found in on the one hand the desire to stack the packages in high stacks which, however, presupposes that the stacking takes place with utmost care, and on the other hand in the fact that a great number of package materials are wholly or partly of plastic. Plastic bags and sacks, have smodth surfaces, which means that even one badly positioned package in a stack can make the whole stack tip over.
One way of avoiding this inconvenience consists of making the packages of a nonslip material. It has been suggested to manufacture such packages, especially sacks of plastic material, wherein one surface has been made coarse for instance, by applying to an ordinary plastic film a thin layer which forms an irregular net-like structure.
This packaging material is however primarily intended to be used for sacks consisting entirely of this material, and the above mentioned disadvantages still remain when the packaging material consists e.g. of paper.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a method of providing nonslippery areas on the normally slippery exterior surfaces of bags, sacks or the like flexible walled containers, comprising forming a non-slip plastic strip by extruding a plastic foil in the form of a tube with at least one coarse non-slippery net-like surface on one side of the foil, cutting the tube longitudinally to form a strip of the plastic foil, winding the strip into a coil, pulling off a length of the coil strip and removing a portion therefrom, and fixing the portion to the exterior surface of the container so that the coarse net-like surface or one of the surfaces, of the portion lies outwardly.
The portion may be fixed to the container surface by an adhesive or heat sealing, for example, and can be used as a closure element.
Heat sealing may be carried out by known means over the whole strip area or in parts in the shape of bands, dots or lines.
When adhesive is used it can be applied to the plastic foil after cutting up the same to form webs which lie in one or in two planes one above the other, which webs before or after cutting up into their final widths are fed over suitable rolls which apply adhesive to one of their surfaces. Naturally it is also possible to apply the adhesive by spraying or in any other known way and it is also possible after applying the adhesive to dry the adhesive e.g. by feeding the foil over suitable heating rolls.
Thus rolls are obtained wherein the coiled foil strip has its adhesive surface always engaging directly the non-slip surface of the underlying layer. When desired the foil strip can.also be provided with a protective layer known per se, which covers the adhesive surface and which is ripped off before using the strip. These protective coverings can be applied as a continuous layer onto the entire web width after providing the same with an adhesive layer, or alternately after cutting the strips into their final width. In the last mentioned case it is then possible to make the protective layer somewhat wider than the foil strip which faciliates its removal.
It is also possible to provide the adhesive foil with reinforcing threads or a reinforcing net which is applied during the application of the adhesive or during the extrusion of the plstic foil.
Manufacturers of the products of the invention are completely free to choose any width of strip. It is to be understood that the expression "strip" also comprises wide strips and also narrow strips corresponding to the commonly used tape-strips, e.g. for closing packages, which can provide a big enough non-slip surface which prevents the packages from sliding when in contact with slippery surfaces.
The adhesive strips may be wound up onto rolls in continuous lengths, which are not cut into suitable lengths by means of known cutting devices until the strips are to be used. It is however, also possible to provide, the strips with transverse perforations so that adhesive strips of a predetermined length can be torn off. These perforations are made in a manner known per se and at any desired manufacturing stage. In the case where the adhesive surface is protected with a protective layer of paper or plastic, the perforations can be included also in this layer. It is also possible to stamp out from a wide foil provided with a protective layer variously shaped areas e.g. triangular, circular, or annular, or stamp perforated lines defining such areas which can then be separated completely only at the time of use.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A method of providing non-slippery areas on the normally slippery exterior surfaces of bags, sacks or the like flexible walled containers, comprising forming of non-slip plastic strip by extruding a plastic foil in the form of a tube with at least one coarse non-slipperv net-like surface on one side of the foil, cutting the tube longitudinally to form a strip of the plastic foil, winding the strip into a coil, pulling off a length of the coil strip and removing a portion therefrom, and fixing the portion to the exterior surface of the container so that the coarse net-like surface, or one of the surfaces, of the portion lies outwardly.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the strip portion is fixed to the container surface by an adhesive or by heat sealing.
3. A method according to claim 2, wherein an adhesive surface of the strip portion is protected with a removable facing layer of paper, plastics or the like flexible sheet material.
4. A method according to any of claims 1--3 wherein the portion is of nonrectangular shape and is stamped out from the plastic foil, or defined by shaped perforation lines made in the foil.
5. A method according to any of claims 1 > wherein the strip portion forms a closure element of the container.
6. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the strip portion is provided with reinforcing threads or a reinforcing net during the application of an adhesive thereto or during extrusion of the plastic foil.
7. A method of providing non-slippery areas on the normally slippery exterior surfaces of bags, sacks, or the like flexible walled packages substantially as hereinbefore described.
