Abstract
159,935. Hawkins, H. W. Nov. 11, 1919. Perforated-tube and like multiple jet burners; flame deflectors. - In an atmospheric gas burner in which the burner head is provided with several burner jets, one or more baffles are arranged in such a position that the cool blue zone of unburnt or partially burnt gaseous mixture is distorted in form and spread out. In an ordinary perforated-ring burner, having circular orifices, the baffie is placed at a distance from each orifice not less than one-half or more than one and a half times the diameter of each orifice. In a normal high-pressure burner provided with circular orifices, the distance of the baffle from each orifice is equal to one or two diameters of the orifice. The baffles may be made adjustable. In one form, a baffle in the form of the fulcrum of a hollow cone rests on a perforated ring forming the burner 'head and having outwardly-directed holes so arranged that the flames impinge obliquely on the baffle. The baffle may be perforated to admit air. In a second form in which a perforated-tube, ring, or like burner 1, Fig. 3, has two rows of outlet holes 2, the baffles 4, 4a are supported on ledges 7, 7a. In a modification in which the apertures 2, Fig. 4, are divided inwardly, the baffle 4 is formed integral with the burner tube. In a third form in which a single line of jets are provided along a central line, an inclined baffle may be arranged at either side, or two baffles 4, 4a, Fig. 6, may be arranged with tongues 4<b> registering with alternate jets. In a fourth form, an annular burner head, Fig. 7, is provided with upwardly and inwardly directed outlet apertures 2, and the baffle is in the form of the frustum of a hollow inverted cone 4 arranged centrally and having a hole in a central boss 10 for a mantle support. In a fifth form. an annular baffle is arranged around the perforated end of a burner tube. In burners with rectangular or elliptical orifices, the baffle is preferably placed away a distance equal to the width of each orifice when the long side of the orifice is horizontal and a distance equal to half the sum nf the length and width when the @ng side is vertical.
