Complete Specification published 30 Sept 1981
INT CL A 62 B 35/02 Index at acceptance A 3 V 5 H ( 54) IMPROVEMENTS IN SEATS FOR VEHICLES ( 71) We, AUTOFLUG G m b H, a German company of Industriestrasse 10, 2084 Rellingen 2, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: -
This invention relates to safety belts, particularly though not exclusively for motor vehicles, of the kind including an automatic reeling mechanism of the vehicle-sensitive or belt-sensitive type The invention relates particularly to adjustable seats, i e those whose back and/or seat portion is adjustable in position, which are provided with such a safety belt.
It is known to fasten the automatic mechanism directly on the vehicle, for example, on the vehicle floor If however the mechanism includes a belt-sensitive blocking device, and a person buckled in the seat adjusts the vehicle seat in a direction in which the belt is pulled out of the reel, the beltsensitive system can cause blocking of the automatic mechanism when the pull-out acceleration exceeds a certain amount.
Equally if the automatic reeling mechanism is mounted on the vehicle seat, and the seat is adjustably moved with an acceleration above a predetermined level, again the blocking mechanism can actuate preventing any paying out of the belt by the reeling mechanism.
Thus, discomfort to an occupant of that seat may arise when adjusting the seat, and it is an object of this invention to overcome this difficulty.
According to the invention there is provided an adjustable seat having a safety belt connected to a vehicle-sensitive and/or belt-sensitive automatic retractor, including means for automatically preventing blocking of the actuator on adjustment of the seat.
Thus the provision of such automatic blocking preventing means renders the blocking mechanism of the retractor inoperative during adjustment of the seat and the aforementioned difficulties overcome.
The blocking preventing means may 'be actuated in a number of ways, but where an adjustment lever is provided on the seat, this is preferably used to actuate the means.
Thus in one embodiment the blocking preventing means includes a sliding block inter 55 acting with a blocking pin to prevent engagement of a blocking member with a thrust ring of the retractor The sliding block may be connected to one end of a Bowden cable, the other end being connected to said lever 60 In another embodiment sliding of said block may be effected by an electromagnet actuated by said lever.
In a further embodiment, the blocking preventing means comprises an electro 65 magnet coil acting directly or indirectly on a blocking member engageable with a toothed wheel of the retractor The electromagnet coil may be actuated by a switch associated with said lever For example said 70 coil may include an armature magnetically cooperating with a portion of the blocking member, or the coil may include a movable armature adapted to block operation of the blocking member Furthermore, the coil 75 may be magnetically coupled to a ball of the retractor when vehicle-sensitive so as to prevent movement of the ball.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, certain embodiments thereof 80 will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:Fig 1 shows a first embodiment of the invention in which the automatic retractor is 85 mounted on a longitudinally displaceable seat rail in a vehicle, Fig 2 is a sectional view to a larger scale of the embodiment of Fig 1, Fig 3 shows a second embodiment of the 90 invention which the retractor is mounted on the floor of a vehicle, Fig 4 is a schematic view of the inside of the retractor of Fig 3, Fig 5 shows an alternative arrangement 95 to that of Fig 4, and Fig 6 shows yet a further alternative arrangement.
As seen in Fig 1 there is a vehicle seat having a seat portion 15 and a back portion 100 13 and which are associated with a safety belt 22 which is automatically retractable ( 21) ( 62) ( 31) ( 33) ( 44) ( 51) ( 52) 1,599,187 into a retractor 21 The seat is adjustable between a position shown and the positions shown in dotted lines, and adjustment lever serving to permit adjustment of the seat in a manner known per se.
The lever 80 is connected to a Bowden cable 79 the other end of which is connected to the retractor 21 When the adjustment lever 80 is actuated, blocking of the automatic retractor is prevented in a manner to be described, so that no blocking of the safety belt occurs which would cause discomfort to the occupant of the seat The belt may be smoothly withdrawn from the retractor.
Turning to Figure 2 there is shown one embodiment of blocking preventing means.
The wire core 78 of Bowden cable 79 is connected to a sliding block 82 guided in a cover 81 of the automatic mechanism 21, which block is displaced in such a way that with its operative face 83 it displaces a blocking pin 84 into a recess 85 of a blocking element 86 In the blocking position the blocking element 86 is no longer able to be applied to a thrust ring 87 and, consequently, cause blocking of the automatic mechanism.
If the seat lever 80 is released, the sliding block 82 slides back and frees the blocking pin 84 which is pulled by a cup spring 88 or the like out of the recess 85 so that the blocking element 86 can operate again.
The figures do not show that in an equivalent way the sliding block 82 can be actuated by an electromagnet controllable via a switch on the seat adjusting lever 80 Likewise the direct influence of an electromagnet on the blocking pin 84 is not shown If the above-described compensating device is operated electrically, it is independent of the fitting position inside or outside the seat.
This also applies to electric control of the vehicle sensitive system 25, as shown in Figs 3 to 6 In these cases also, a specific positioning of the automatic mechanism 21 is not absolutely essential.
Fig 3 shows the retractor 21 mounted on the floor of the vehicle behind the seat In this case the seat adjusting lever 89 is associated with a switch 90 such that when lever 89 is actuated to enable the seat to be adjusted, switch 90 is closed allowing current to flow to the blocking device.
Turning now to Fig 4 there is shown one embodiment of the retractor 21 used in Fig.
3 The retractor is vehicle-sensitive the blocking member 92 being actuated by a ball 93 on deceleration of the vehicle to enqaae a toothed wheel 95 to block the retractor The blocking member 92 which is mounted on a bracket 25 also has a further arm having a magnetic member 94 mounted thereon Adjacent this arm is mounted an electromagnet 91 whose windings are excited by means of the switch 90 Thus, when lever 89 is operated to alter the seat position, the blocking member 92 is automatically prevented from engaging the wheel 95 so that the retractor does not lock.
A modified embodiment is shown in Fig.
where the electromagnet 91 has a movable armature which on excitement of the electromagnet is drawn downwardly to abut against raised portion 97 formed on the member 92 Again therefore blocking of the belt is automatically prevented when the electromagnet 91 is excited by the switch 90.
In Fig 6, the electromagnet 91 acts directly on the deceleration sensitive ball 93 preventing it from moving to engage the member 92 with the wheel 95 upon movement of the seat.
