PATENT SPECIFICATION
( 11) l 599 188 ( 21) Application No 30127180 ( 22) Filed 22 Dec 1977 ( 19) ( 62) Divided Out of No 1 599 186 ( 31) Convention Application No 2658 747 ( 32) Filed 24 Dec 1976 in ( 33) Fed Rep of Germany (DE) ( 44) Complete Specification published 30 Sept 1981 ( 51) INT CL, A 62 B 35/02 ( 52) Index at acceptance A 3 V 5 R ( 54) IMPROVEMENTS IN SEATS FOR VEHICLES ( 71) We, AUTOFLUG G m b H, a German company of Industriestrasse 10, 2084 Rellingen 2, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we prqy that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following
statement: -
This invention relates to safety seats incorporating a safety belt, particularly although not exclusively for use in motor vehicles The invention relates to such safety seats having a vehicle-sensitive automatic retractor mounted on the seat.
With such seats, the problem arises that if the retractor is fixedly mounted on the seat it will assume different orientations depending on the position to which the seat is adjusted This leads to different response characteristics of the vehicle-sensitive blocking of the seat belt and could in an extreme case cause the retractor to be blocked perminently It is an object of the invention to meet these difficulties.
According to the invention there is provided a safety seat having mounted thereon a safety belt connected to a vehicle-sensitive automatic retractor mounted on the seat, and including a compensating arrangement adapted to maintain the orientation of the retractor constant upon a change of configuration or orientation of the seat, the retractor being freely movable to assume its orientation under normal conditions and including a vehicle-sensitive device adapted to lock the retractor in its said orientation in response to a predetermined deceleration of the seat.
Thus under normal conditions, i e when there is no appreciable deceleration of the seat, the retractor will remain freely movable and always stay in its desired orientation However, if the seat is mounted in a vehicle, and the vehicle undergoes a substantial deceleration, for example braking in advance of a collision, the vehicle-sensitive device will automatically lock the retractor in its orientation, and the normal vehicle-sensitive arrangement for blocking the safety belt will operate.
Preferably the compensating arrangement comprises a pendulum connected to the retractor, in which case the pivot axis of the pendulum may advantageously coincide with the reeling axis of the retractor The vehiclesensitive device may comprise a ball sensor engaging a lever having a friction surface adapted to engage a friction coupling, preferably in the form of a arc of a circle, fixedly mounted on the seat.
In order that the invention may be readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a retractor assembly mounted on the back portion of a vehicle seat.
The retractor itself may be of known form, comprising a toothed wheel 95 and a blocking member 25 adapted to blockingly cooperate therewith Thus a vehicle-sensitive ball sensor 93 is, on a predetermined deceleration of the vehicle, adapted to pivot blocking member 25 so that pawl 92 engages the toothed wheel 95.
The blocking member 25 is mounted on a suspension member 96 which is connected at its lower end to a weight 50, so as to constitute a pendulum This pendulum is freely movable about the reeling axis 49 of the retractor and thus the orientation of the retractor assembly will remain constant despite differing orientations of the seat back.
The retractor also includes a further double-armed lever 100, one end of which is engaged by a further ball sensor 102 to form a vehicle-sensitive device, the other end of which includes a friction lining 101 On pivoting of the lever 100 in the anti-clockwise direction, friction lining 101 will engage against friction coupling 99 which is in the form of an arc of a circle, so as to lock the retractor in that particular position Once the retractor has been locked, the other vehicle-sensitive ball 93 causes the blocking member 25 to engage the toothed wheel 49 so as to prevent any paying out of the belt.

2 A safety seat according to claim 1 in which the compensating arrangement comprises a pendulum connected to the retractor.
3 A safety seat according to claim 2 in which the pivot axis of the pendulum coincides with the reeling axis of the retractor.
4 A safety seat according to claim 1, 2 or 3 in which the vehicle-sensitive device comprises a ball sensor engaging a lever having a friction surface adapted to engage a friction coupling fixedly mounted on the seat.
A safety seat according to claim 4 in which the friction coupling is in the form of an arc of a circle.
6 A safety seat according to claim 4 or in which the lever comprises a double armed lever, one arm of which engages said ball sensor and the other arm having said friction surface.
7 A safety seat substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
