Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO SLIDING DOORS (71) We, WARD BROTHERS (SHERBURN) LIMITED, a British company of Widespan Works, Sherburn, Malton in the County of York, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- This invention relates to a sliding door and track assembly in or for buildings, the assembly being of the type, hereinafter referred to as the type described, comprising a track in which there is engaged at least one slider mounted on the door whereby the door is supported below the track.
Conventionally, the track is relatively weak and does not comprise a self-supporting structural element and hence is provided as a separate element fixed to a hot rolled steel joist or channel which is self-supporting and so reinforces and supports the track, the hot rolled steel joist or channel being fixed to the building, for example, by brackets at spaced positions longitudinally of the joist or channel.
An object of the invention is to provide a new and improved sliding door and track assembly of the type described in or for a building.
According to one aspect of the present invention we provide a building having a sliding door and track assembly of the type described in which the track is connected to the building by brackets at spaced positions longitudinally of the track without an reinforcing supporting means other than said brackets, the track comprising a pair of beams each comprising a web with a channel shaped formation at the, in situ, lower end thereof, the beams being connected together so as to provide a pair of parallel spaced apart channel section track parts with which parts of the slider are engaged.
According to another aspect of the invention we provide a sliding door and track assembly of the type described in which the track is adapted to be connected to a building by bracket at spaced positions longitudinally of the track without any reinforcing supporting means other than said brackets, the track comprising a pair of beams each comprising a web with a channel shaped formation at the, in situ, lower end thereof, the beams being connected together so as to provide a pair of parallel spaced apart channel section track parts with which parts of the slider are adapted to be engaged in use.
In both of the above aspects of the invention, the track may comprise a pair of cold rolled beams.
Each channel section may include a generally planar web arranged, in use, in a vertical plane, a horizontal flange at the lower end of the web and a vertical upwardly extending lip at the free end of the flange, the said flange, lip and a part of the web comprising said channel section formation.
Each section may have a similar configuration of flange and lip at its upper end and the flange and lip at the upper end may extend on the same side of the web as the flange and lip of the lower end or on the opposite side of the web thereto.
Preferably, each cold rolled beam comprises a pair of spaced parallel flange portions and a web extending between said flange portions, the web comprising a planar central part which extends normal to the flange portions and is flanked by at least one inclined part so that the plane of the central part intersects at least one flange portion and the lower flange portion having an upwardly extending lip at its free end. The planar central part may be flanked by identical inclined parts at its upper and lower ends and a downwardly extending lip is provided on the upper flange portion.
Alternatively the central part may be flanked by two inclined parts the said inclined parts may extend on the same side of the central part and diverge away from each other or may extend on opposite sides of the central part and lie generally parallel.
The inclined parts may extend directly to the flange portions or may be connected to their associated flange portion by an end part which lies parallel to said central part.
The invention will now be described in more detail by way of example with references to the accompanying drawings wherein: FIGURE 1 is an exploded front elevation of the door assembly embodying the invention, FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, FIGURE 3 is a cross sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, to an enlarged scale and, FIGURES 4 to 7 illustrate alternative forms of track section.
Referring now to the drawings a sliding door and track assembly is provided on a building indicated generally at 10 figure 2 and comprises a pair of door leafs 11 each of which is provided with two hangers or slides 12 having rollers 13 which are received in channel section formations 14 of a self-supporting track 15. The track 15 is connected by brackets 16 to the building 10.
As is shown in Figure 3 the track 15 comprises a pair of cold rolled beams 17 each of which comprise a pair of spaced parallel flanged portions 18 inter-connected by a web 19 having a planar central part 20 flanked by two inclined diverging parts 21 such that the plane of the central part 20 intersects the flange portions 18. The flange portions 18 are of L-shape in cross section one limb 22 of the L section being shorter than the other and constituting an inturned lip at the free end of each flange portion 18.
The lip 22 at the lower end of each beam, its associated flange portion 18, and part of the web 19 comprises a generally channel section formation within which wheels 13 of the hanger 12 are received.
The sections 17 are connected together by means of a bolt and nut assembly 23 provided with an encircling spacer sleeve 24.
Such bolt and sleeve assemblies 23, 24 are provided at spaced positions longitudinally of the sections at the locations indicated at A in Figure 1.
At the end of the track, stop plates 25 are provided to prevent the hangers leaving the ends of the track and also to facilitate connection together of the beams 17.
Over the region of the door opening a flashing strip 26 is provided as best shown in Figure 3.
If desired, the cold rolled beams may be of other configuration than that described hereinbefore for example those shown in Figure 4.
Because the track is made from cold rolled beams of the configuration described hereinbefore, the track comprises a structural member and requires only to be secured by the building by the two brackets 16. No other intermediate reinforcing supporting means is required for the track. The hereinbefore described sliding door and track assembly is particularly suitable for use in the building described in our co-pending application No.
