Abstract

159,417. Starr, F. March 8, 1920. Hand driving-mechanism.-A velocipede for children is characterized by a double rack-andpinion drive for the rear axle actuated from a single central hand-lever pivoted at the upper end of the front fork. The racks 10, 11 connected to the hand-operated lever 5 engage with spaced pinions which are mounted upon the rear axle 14 and are fitted with one-way clutches so that the drive is effected alternately through the pinions. The clutch consists of rollers 21, 22, Fig. 4, which are pressed outwards by springs 19, 20 and are adapted to be wedged between surfaces 15 and 23, 24. One or both rear wheels 29 may be fixed to the axle 14 and one or both of these wheels may be fitted with a plate perforated with a series of holes so that the axle can be connected thereto either centrally to give smooth running or eccentrically to give a rocking motion. The lever 5 is mounted within a ring 4 on a cross-pin 7, the ring being pivotally connected at 6 to the front of the frame 1.
